Considered one of the most important orchestras in Latin America, the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra returns to Teatro Mayor in 2014. In February 2012, under Principal Conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the Orchestra obtained a Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for its live recording of the Symphony No. 4 by Brahms. The Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela was founded by José Antonio Abreu and a group of musicians inspired by the ideals of Simon Bolivar. Thirty years after its inception, it continues the tradition of creating new spaces for Venezuelan musical excellence.
The Orchestra has performed alongside renowned maestros such as Claudio Abbado, Luciano Pavarotti, Martha Argerich, Simon Rattle, Lorin Maazel, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Juan Diego Flórez, Krzysztof Penderecki, Helene Grimaud and Helmuth Rilling, among others.
Gustavo Dudamel is now days one of the world's most important conductors. Apart from serving as conductor of the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, he conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. He also performs regularly with orchestras such as Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Israel Philharmonic, Santa Cecilia Orchestra and Gothenburg Symphony.
