Grupo Corpo, Contemporary Dance – Brazil

Considered one of the most prestigious companies in contemporary dance, Grupo Corpo has an almost operatic dimension in the sense of a close collaboration between the arts.

The group presents its choreographies ÌMÃ and Sem Mim (Without Me), by Rodrigo Pederneiras.  The principle of complementarity and interdependence that governs human relations serves as a starting point for creating a magnet (ÌMÃ).  Soft and vital, this choreography is characterized by the constant alternation of fullness and emptiness in the occupation of the stage.  Solos, duets and larger or smaller formations that form and dissipate at any moment, in a relentless game between unification and dispersion.

In Sem Mim, the sea in the Spanish city of Vigo, carries away and brings back the lover, the friend, and gives life and movement to the choreography.  The ballet moves to the beat of the original music composed by Carlos Núñez (Vigo) and José Miguel Wisnik (Brazil), and is based on the only set of  pieces from the medieval Galician-Portuguese secular repertoire.  The lyrics of these songs served Pederneiras to mark movements ranging from calm to rage.
